Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the wide array of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

To start off right you need to read up on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher they closer they are to natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they are from the spectral color.

Gemstone cut is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase is made. The precision of cut is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. This is talking about the stones purity with no internal conclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Agate, Spinel or Tourmaline and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In Nevada you can hunt for Rock Crystal, Citrine, Nevada Turquoise and Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal.

Emeralds usually have a high number of internal inclusions called "jardins". Consequently, emeralds are fragile and very susceptible to damage from a knock, heat or vibration. Also, the oil on an emerald can be stripped away by cleaning, making the emerald change appearance. If this happens, simply bring it to your jeweler for re-oiling.
