How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to visit different areas nearby or in some cases other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this hobby interest you read along as this article discusses the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

To start off right you need to learn all you can on each of the gemstones out there. You'll find it very helpful to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

The first item to take into account is gemstone color. You want the gemstone that is as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. This means violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices for very pale or very dark precious and semi precious stones are less per carat.

Gemstone cut is the next factor to consider. The preciseness of the cut determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. The cut will ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much it will be valued.

Next to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Next comes weight and size. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are priced by the unit, carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Emerald, Pyrite or Natural moissanite for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone.

There is the precious opal, the common opal, the fire opal, the Peruvian opal
and then, of course, there is the synthetic opal. The Sanskrit language knew the
stone as upala, while the Greek variation is opallios while the Latin world for
opal is opalus. All of the different word origins refer to the special nature of
the opal. The Sanskrit word literally means "precious stone," and the Greek and
the Roman meanings have a shared outcome. They called the opal "precious stone".
