My Gemstones Reviews
Our Featured Gemological ArticleCollecting Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Many people, young and old, say collecting
loose gemstones or
loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect gemstones yourself.
At the very beginning you need to read up on each of the gemstones out there. You'll find it very helpful to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.
The chief thing you need to consider is stone color. You want the stone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectral colors. We are talking about red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The prices for very pale or very dark precious and semi precious gemstones are lower.
Gemstone cut is an important aspect to consider when evaluating gemstones. The cut has to be done in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with the poor cut will be muted or washed out. Color tone, saturation, and hue will never be consistent.
A third consideration is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the purity of the stone or the absence of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.
Another consideration is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Look at each stone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the United States in New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Mount Ogden, British Columbia or labradorite on the adjacent islands and coastal area of Labrador and even ammolite from Lethbridge, Alberta. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.
