Gemological Information ArticleHow To Start Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
Why would someone go to the trouble of collect
loose gemstones? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like
natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many people love to collect and work with each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Read long as we discuss the hobby of
loose gemstone collecting.
The very first step in beginning this hobby the intelligent way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will help you to know exactly what you should do.
The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They become less valuable the farther they are from the spectral color.
The cut of the gemstone is an important aspect to consider when you value gemstone. The stone has to be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. The hue, tone and color saturation will be inconsistent.
Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone. This refers to the purity of the gemstone with no internal conclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.
You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.
Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or look in the garnet fields in Harts Range in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Hints On natural russian diamond
In the 1950's the Gemological Institute of America established a system for
grading diamonds based on the four C's. This was a great asset to the diamond
community and it became the standard for grading world wide. While the system
for grading color and clarity removed most redundancies, the standards for
grading the cut left something to be desired. That is not necessarily a
criticism of the GIA; no one has been able to establish a simple a usable system
that would cover all the variables involved.
