Gemological Article Of The MonthHow To Collect Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Gemology is the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from
loose gemstones to
natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in making a collection of
loose gemstones or
loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit different local areas to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you read along as we show you the different aspects of this hobby.
At the very beginning you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.
First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the more they deviate from the spectral color.
How the gemstone has been cut is the second most important factor to look at before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.
Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of the gemstone. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Another consideration is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Florida you can find Chalcedony and Conch Pearl. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or sodalite and rose quartz near Bancroft, Ontario as well as Ammolite, a rare gemstone found only in southern Alberta. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.
