First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the more they deviate from the spectral color.
How the gemstone has been cut is the second most important factor to look at before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.
Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of the gemstone. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Another consideration is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. A gemstones that is normally found to be clean is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a 10X gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope.
