First on your list to factor in should be gemstone color. You want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. This means blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. The prices of very dark are very pale gemstones are lower.

An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.
Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting.
