Collecting Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the various gemstones found around the world today. This article will examine the things you need to know in starting in this hobby.

The first step in beginning this hobby the wise way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find books on the subject that will make you an informed buyer.

First on your list to factor in should be gemstone color. You want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. This means blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. The prices of very dark are very pale gemstones are lower.

The cut of a gemstonestone is the second most important value determination to consider. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. The cut will determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Next up is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone. Any large flaws are visible to the naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Look at each stone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in New Mexico you'll find Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Rock Crystal and Obsidian And in Canada you can hunt for rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or amethyst near Thunder Bay, Ontario as well as iolite from Manitouwadge, Ontario. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

The sapphire does share a lot in common with its' ruby relative, but there are
some differences. First of all, the sapphire is must more widespread and more
accessible. This is because sapphires originate in the earth's upper crust. The
second difference is that it is blue and some natural processes have to occur
that are a little different from rubies for a change in color. In some cases,
however, early natural metamorphisms are identical to the ruby. They both come
from the family of corundums, and share the same attributes of light refraction,
density and hardness. Both stones are derived from the same chemical
crystallization of alumina.
