By Lee MacRae
Why would anyone collect items like
loose gemstones, you ask? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And just like
natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many people love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we look at the hobby of collecting
loose gemstones.
The very first step in becoming a gemstone collector the right way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can locate all you need to know about the subject that will help you to know exactly what you should do.
Color is a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer a color is to its pure spectral color the more valuable it is. Traditionally, these specter colors are yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange and red. Gemstones colors that are paler or darker than the pure color tend to be less valued.
The cut of the gemstone is easily one of the most important aspects when evaluating gemstones. The gemstone must be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will be muted or washed out. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will always appear inconsistent
Another factor to look at is the clarity of the stone. This means the stones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.
Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Look at each stone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can find your raw materials through field trips In the US in Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or labradorite on Tabor Island, and even amethyst from Nova Scotia. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.
