Collecting Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Gemology is a term referring to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from
loose gemstones to
natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect
loose gemstones or
loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit different areas nearby to look for raw gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you read along as we discuss the various aspects of gemstone collecting.
The first thing you need to do is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to learn as much as possible about your new hobby. The more you understand about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to buy.
First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They are valued much less the more they move away from the spectral color.
The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut gemstone showcases the pure color of the stone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way to determine the precision in the cut of the stone is to consider how evenly it reflects light over the stones complete surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting internally. Gemstone color will be washed out.
Our next consideration is the clarity of the gemstone. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Another consideration is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each gemstone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Utah You can find Topaz, Garnet, Petrified Wood, Jasper and Obsidian. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Dease Lake, British Columbia or labradorite on Tabor Island, as well as ammolite from Lethbridge, Alberta. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

Common ones are: blue lace agate, fire agate, moss agate, tree agate and
petrified wood. One will often see these in agate cabochons or agate beads. I've

Our Featured Gemstone WriterCollecting Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like
loose diamonds or
loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the wide array of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. This article will examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.
To begin with you need to learn all you can on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.
First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value they closer they are to natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they are from the natural color.
How a stone has been cut is the second most important value determination to consider before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.
The next factor to consider is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This means the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, particles or spots within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.
Gemstones are often categorized according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference regarding specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Olivine (Peridot), Opal (Girasol) or Tourmaline and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz.

Proportion refers to the angles and relative measurements of a polished diamond.
More than any other feature, proportions determine a diamond's optical
properties. Studies have shown that table size, crown angle, and pavilion depth
have a dramatic effect on a diamond's appearance. Symmetry is a grading term for
the exactness of shape and placement of facets. Variations in symmetry include
off-center culets and tables, poor facet alignment, misshapen facets, out-of-
round girdles, and wavy girdles.

When it comes to gemstones, size matters. All else being equal, the bigger the
stone, the more valuable it is. In wholesale gem trading, gems are often priced
per carat. It would make sense therefore that the more carats, the more its
worth. However, it doesnt stop there. An additional factor in the value is
the rarity of large stones. This means that the larger the stone, the higher
the price per carat. For example, a 1 carat ruby with a nice color and cut
might cost $700. But a 5 carat ruby of similar cut and color will not cost $
3500 (5 X $700); it might cost $10,000. This is because it is very rare to find
a ruby that is 5 carats. The effect that size has on price and value is
determined by how rare large stones are. For example, very large pieces of
amethyst and topaz are relatively easy to find meaning that the price of large
stones is not exponentially higher.
